Introducing MotionCAPTCHA: Stop Spam, Draw Shapes

MotionCAPTCHA is a jQuery plugin, combining MrDoob’s Harmony Canvas experiment with the best parts of two gesture recognition algorithms, that requires users to draw the shape they see in order to submit a form.

Although it’s a proof-of-concept for now, I’m pretty confident that I can turn this into a production-ready CAPTCHA solution, featuring a PHP Captcha fallback, proper accessibility methods and server-side authorisation.

Killing spam has never been so artistic!

Make sure to watch the repository on Github to see when this thing becomes production-ready. I’m pumped about it!

PS. Thanks for all the awesome and kind support everyone’ given so far on Forrst and around the interwebs. Y’all are great!

  1. What’s preventing a bot from tracing the suggested shape, possibly with a random deviance to look more human?

    • Nothing! Having said that, if you think a bot tracing the shape is the main issue with this, you might need to take a closer look at the readme and source code :o)

  2. Had some apprehension about this working for me, as I use a touchpad exclusively. It forgave my imprecision :) Good job.

  3. Well, people like decaptcher.com or captchaking.com will have no problem with that either.

For bottom page forms an animated gif that waits 30+ seconds to show the captcha message would slow down this services considerably.

    OR

A gif that shows the wrong captcha first. A huge queue of unsolvable captchas that they would have to pay on and on, for each try. That would be funny.

    OR

Html nearby the captcha telling the person to recognize what is too big or to small/ don’t bellong/bellong in the captcha picture.

  4. OR

a acaptcha made out of always varying in number of diferent images that put togheter, form the real capctha. Like really small dots to form the letter “A”

    OR

a huge css sprite made out of a matrix of letters, that can grab words or letters from the sprite and compose them togheter to form a captcha, even if they get the image, they’ll have to decode css too.

    run out of ideas

  5. Is this project still in development? I been looking for a new captcha system to integrate into my Nuke Evo Xtreme CMS system that my site works off of. My current captcha system has a issue that I can’t seem to find, and need something that I could possibly implement into the site that will allow me to once again use it for my site but also allow me to implement into different sections of my site that I like to have a captcha made available.
